Controller Drift Test
Connect a controller, press any button, then let go of both sticks. The meter shows how far each stick reports from perfect centre — the raw value, before any game deadzone hides it.
How to Read the Result
- Under 2% — effectively perfect. Nothing to worry about.
- 2–5% — normal tolerance. Every game's default deadzone absorbs this; you will never notice it.
- 5–10% — early wear. Invisible at console default deadzones, but it will show if you lower the in-game deadzone, and it usually gets worse.
- Over 10% — real drift. The camera or character will creep on its own in most games.
Measure twice: once at rest, and once after flicking each stick to its edge and letting it snap back a few times. A worn stick settles at a different off-centre point each release — that inconsistency is a more reliable sign of a failing module than any single reading.
Why Controllers Drift
Most analog sticks are built around potentiometers — a metal wiper sliding across a resistive carbon track for each axis. Three things go wrong with them:
- Track wear. Thousands of hours of movement scrape the carbon track thin, so the stick reports positions that are not real. This is the classic, permanent cause.
- Contamination. Dust, skin oils and sugary residue work into the mechanism and disturb the wiper contact. This looks identical to wear but is often recoverable with cleaning.
- Spring fatigue. The centring springs weaken and stop pulling the stick all the way back, so it rests off-centre even though the track is fine.
Hall-effect and TMR sticks measure the stick's magnet contactlessly, so they have no track to wear out. They are standard in many third-party controllers and available as drop-in replacement modules for most first-party pads.
Platform Notes
PS5 DualSense & DualShock 4
Both use the same family of potentiometer modules and typically develop drift after 1–2 years of heavy play. Sony repairs drifting DualSense controllers free under warranty; out of warranty, replacement hall-effect modules are widely available but require soldering. The DualSense Edge has tool-free swappable stick modules — if you have one, swap modules between sides to confirm the module (not the board) is at fault.
Xbox One & Series Controllers
Same potentiometer design, same failure mode. Series controllers park the sticks slightly differently but drift identically with wear. Microsoft repairs in-warranty controllers; the Elite line has had enough drift complaints that an extended service program existed for early Elite Series 2 units — check yours if it drifts.
Switch Joy-Con & Pro Controller
Joy-Con drift is the most famous case — the small modules wear fast, and Nintendo repairs drifting Joy-Cons free of charge in many regions, even out of warranty. Check Nintendo's support site for your country before paying for anything. Note that each Joy-Con pairs to the browser as a separate, non-standard device, so this test may show readings on odd axes; the Pro Controller reports normally.
PC / Generic Controllers
Everything the browser sees through the Gamepad API works here. If a cheap controller shows heavy drift when new, that is loose manufacturing tolerance rather than wear — some budget pads rest at 8–10% out of the box and rely on huge driver deadzones to hide it.
How to Fix Stick Drift
- Rule out the surface and the pairing. Rest the controller on a flat surface, re-pair or re-plug it, and make sure a second controller is not connected and feeding input.
- Clean the stick base. Power the controller off, lift the rubber skirt at the stick base, and rotate the stick while applying a little isopropyl alcohol (90%+) with a cotton swab. Let it dry fully. This cures a surprising share of drift, temporarily or for good.
- Use the warranty. Drift is a recognised defect — Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all repair it in-warranty, and Nintendo often out of warranty for Joy-Cons.
- Replace the module. Out of warranty, a replacement stick module costs a few dollars. Fitting one means opening the controller and desoldering; choose a hall-effect or TMR module so the drift never comes back.
- Raise the in-game deadzone as a stopgap. It hides drift at the cost of fine control near centre.
Buying a Used Controller?
Run this test before you pay — drift is the number one fault in second-hand controllers and invisible until you are in a game. Check the resting peak on both sticks, flick-release each stick several times, then use the full gamepad test to confirm every button and trigger registers.

Yes — DualSense, DualShock 4, Xbox One/Series, Switch Pro and most USB or Bluetooth pads. Individual Joy-Cons pair with a non-standard mapping, so their readings may land on odd axes. Chrome and Edge are the most reliable browsers for it.
Will drift show in this test but not in games?
Yes. This reads the raw values before any deadzone, while games ignore small deflections near centre. A stick resting at 7 percent measures as worn here but still feels fine in play — until it crosses the game's deadzone.
