About Check A Device

Free, privacy-first hardware testing tools that run entirely in your browser.

What We Do

Check A Device provides a comprehensive suite of free online tools for testing your device's hardware components. Whether you're buying a used phone, troubleshooting a laptop issue, or simply curious about your device's capabilities, our tests give you instant answers.

We currently offer over 20 different tests covering audio and video, display quality, input devices, system information, and mobile sensors. Every test runs directly in your web browser using standard web APIs -- no downloads, no installations, no accounts required.

Our Approach

Privacy First

All tests run locally on your device. Your webcam feed, microphone audio, sensor readings, and test results never leave your browser. We do not collect, transmit, or store any of your hardware data.

No Barriers

Every tool is free to use with no sign-ups, paywalls, or hidden fees. We believe basic hardware diagnostics should be accessible to everyone regardless of their technical expertise.

Cross-Platform

Our tools work across Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Whether you're on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone, you can run the tests that matter to your device.

Accuracy

We use the latest browser APIs and web standards to provide reliable, real-time test results. Each test is designed to give you actionable information about your specific hardware.

Available Tests

Our testing suite covers a wide range of hardware components:

  • Audio & Video -- Speaker test, microphone test, and webcam test to verify your media hardware works correctly.
  • Display -- Screen color accuracy, dead pixel detection, brightness levels, and monitor refresh rate measurement.
  • Input Devices -- Keyboard key testing, mouse button and scroll verification, touchscreen responsiveness, multi-touch point detection, and gamepad/controller support.
  • System -- System information detection, GPU and WebGL identification, battery health monitoring, and internet speed measurement.
  • Mobile Sensors -- Accelerometer, gyroscope, compass, vibration motor, and ambient light sensor testing for smartphones and tablets.

When to Use Check A Device

  • Buying a used device -- Quickly verify that all hardware components are functioning before purchasing a second-hand phone, laptop, or tablet.
  • Troubleshooting -- Isolate whether an issue is hardware or software related by testing individual components.
  • After repairs -- Confirm that replaced or repaired components (screen, speakers, sensors) are working correctly.
  • Curiosity -- Discover your device's capabilities like maximum touch points, refresh rate, GPU model, and sensor accuracy.

How It Works

Check A Device leverages modern web APIs built into your browser to communicate directly with your device's hardware. Technologies like WebRTC (for webcam and microphone), the Web Audio API (for speakers), the Gamepad API, the Generic Sensor API, and WebGL (for GPU detection) allow us to run meaningful hardware tests without any software installation.

Because all processing happens client-side in your browser, tests are instant and your data stays private. The only network requests we make are for serving the web pages themselves and optional analytics (with your consent).
